Encapsulation Method

Please choose between the following encapsulation methods:

Raw 

Many people prefer their placentas to be encapsulated raw based on the idea that heat destroys vital enzymes in food. It may also be the case that the raw method yields a medicine with more hormones and nutrients than the TCM method. When your placenta capsules are prepared using the raw method, the placenta is thoroughly washed, carefully diced and dried, all without being exposed to temperatures higher than 118F. This method may take slightly longer, but often results in more capsules that may have higher nutritional content.

TCM Method

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, the process of labor and birth leaves a lot of open, empty space, which is considered very yin, or cold. Therefore, many people seek to promote healing during the postpartum period by adding yang energy via what Chinese herbalists refer to as "heat".  Using the TCM method, I gently steam the placenta with lemon, ginger and chili to add this heat, before dehydrating and placing in capsules. I steam for a short time so as to preserve the quality of the placenta. The final result is a warming, tonifying, and nourishing remedy for the postpartum.

Why encapsulate and consume your placenta?

The consumption of the placenta after birth is a common practice, and for good reason. The postpartum period can be challenging for many people, up to 80% of whom experience some form of postpartum depression or "baby blues", a mental and emotional state characterized by anxiety, feelings of discontent, and weepiness. I charge $200 for placenta encapsulation. This flat rate includes:

  • Encapsulation within 3 days of the birth at your home
    • I will typically complete the capsules within 48 hours after your birth
    • You will receive about 100 capsules, depending on the size of your placenta
  • An umbilical cord keepsake 
  • Amber glass jar for storage
